RockShox Lyrik Air Shaft FAQ

Which models of Lyrik forks can use this upgrade air spring with Buttercups?

The 2023 RockShox DebonAir+ w/ ButterCups Upgrade Kit for Lyrik D1 is only compatible with D1 and newer models of the RockShox lyrik.

This kit will NOT fit in any RockShox Lyrik that is not a D1 or newer model.

How do I properly lubricate and install this air shaft into my RockShox Lyrik?

Below is the installation procedure we follow in our shop:

  1. REMOVE THE AIR, remove the lower legs, and remove the current air spring.
  2. Clean the inside of the air-side stanchion and lower legs like you normally would during a fork service.
  3. Drizzle Maxima Plush Dynamic Light Oil* onto the main piston seal and poly bushings. Gently spin the seal and bushings by hand to ensure that the oil is fully covering all sides of the seals and bushings. You want the oil to coat all sides of the seals, including the backside of the seal where it contacts the air shaft. Be sure to avoid displacing the poly bushings while spinning them.
  4. Apply the same oil onto the o-ring seal on the base plate in the same manner as step 3.
  5. Apply a small amount of Plush Dynamic Light Oil above and below the inner seal of the base plate that slides on the air shaft. Slide the base plate up and down while simultaneously rotating it in a gentle manner.
  6. Steps 3 through 5 are meant to "activate" or "wake up" the air shaft by fully lubricating all seals to reduce any sliding friction. Now that all of the air shaft's seals are lubricated, you can move on to installing the shaft into the stanchion.
  7. Take a fingertip-sized dab of Slickoleum and mix it with a small amount of Plush Dynamic Light Oil. Apply that mixture to the inside of the air-side stanchion. Apply the remainder of that mixture to the outside of the piston seal and base plate seal.
  8. Depress the air valve (or remove the upper air cap) and carefully insert the air shaft assembly into the stanchion.
  9. Insert the base plate spacer until it is fully seated and then install the snap ring to hold everything in.
  10. Reassemble the fork as you usually would during a normal fork service. Be sure to install a new RockShox 8mm Crush Washer to ensure a proper seal.

*NOTE - The RockShox Service Manual calls for Maxima Plush Dynamic Heavy Oil, but we've felt that the Light oil mixed with a little Slickoleum feels a little more smooth.

Will I need a new damper that matches the same length of travel as the new air shaft?

You do not need to pay any attention to your damper because the damper will just extend to accomodate for the increased travel, or compress to accomodate for the decreased travel. Yes, you can even decrease your 160mm RockShox Lyrik all the way down to 140mm and your damper will simply compress to the new travel without any negative effects. Any RockShox Lyrik that is a D1 model or newer has a damper with a maximum travel of 160mm, and since 160mm is the longest air shaft they make for this chassis, there is no way to run into compatibility issues with the damper or air shaft lengths.

What is included with this air shaft?

The 2023 RockShox DebonAir+ w/ ButterCups Upgrade Kit for Lyrik D1 includes an entirely new air shaft assembly, a new snap ring, a new sag ring and all accompanying seals pre-installed. The air shaft is available in multiple travel options for you to choose from.

What supplies and accessories do I need to install this air shaft into my RockShox ZEB?

Besides the air shaft, you would need all of the supplies required to do a lower leg service. You would need the following parts to do that yourself:

  1. Maxima Plush Dynamic Light Oil for the lower leg oil bath and air shaft lubrication
  2. Slickoleum to lubricate the dust wipers and air shaft
  3. Syringe to get the oil in the fork
  4. RockShox Fork Crush Washer - 8mm for air spring side lower leg
  5. RockShox Fork Crush Washer - 8mm Flanged for damper side lower leg

We also recommend replacing your lower leg dust wiper seals while the fork is taken apart if the current dust wipers have about 75 hours or more of riding on them:
  1. Rockshox 35mm Dust Wiper Kit (includes crush washers so you wouldn't need to order those separately)
  2. RockShox 35mm Seal Driver is required to install the new dust wipers (you can use the 35mm seal drivers from PUSH if the RockShox option is sold out)
